Ohio State Football: Graduate transfer is a ‘Big’ get for the Buckeyes
Since it was announced Ryan Day would be the next Ohio State football coach outstanding players have been flocking to Columbus.
Today Jonah Jackson announced he will be joining the Ohio State football team. That’s quite a coup for head coach Ryan Day as he has coveted the offensive lineman since he decided to leave Rutgers to pursue an opportunity elsewhere as a graduate transfer.
Adding Jackson is a big plus for Ohio State’s offensive line coach Greg Studrawa. While there are talented linemen on the roster there is little experience among the players who will be competing for starting positions.
And Jackson is a proven talent as well as being experienced. The 6-4, 305 pound guard was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten last season for the Scarlet Knights. And he is a versatile lineman who has played both center and guard.
The only returning player on Ohio State’s offensive line who started most of the 2018 season is left tackle Thayer Munford. The only other linemen who have started for the Buckeyes are Joshua Alabi, Wyatt Davis and Brandon Bowen.

Alabi filled in for Munford late in the season and Davis started in the Rose Bowl after guard Demetrius Knox suffered an injury during the Michigan game. Bowen started half of the 2017 season at right guard before he was injured, but he has yet to regain his starting position.
Having the graduate transfer in the mix will allow coach Studrawa to experiment with the tackle positions. Assuming Jackson and Davis lock down the starting guard spots, and Josh Myers earns the starting center position, that would allow Bowen to be moved to right tackle.
He would then battle Alabi and last year’s five star recruit Nicholas Petit-Frere for the starting spot. The losers of the battle would back up the two starting tackles and give Ohio State plenty of depth on both ends of the line of scrimmage.
Jackson was yet another terrific get for Ryan Day, and he has had quite a few since he became the head coach of the Buckeyes. I’m not sure any other coach has landed the recruits, transfers and assistants he has since taking over the helm.
