The Ohio State basketball team is having difficulty moving up in the Big Ten power rankings with the number of talented teams in the conference.

Another week of Big Ten basketball is in the books and there were a lot of surprising finishes that came our way in week 13. For the third week in a row there is a new leader atop the rankings and as expected teams are starting to show their true colors.

Unless that team is named Indiana because we have no idea what their true colors are yet. It’s time for the week 13 Big Ten Basketball Power Rankings!

  1. Purdue | 16-6 (9-2)
  2. Michigan | 20-2 (9-2)
  3. Michigan State | 18-4 ( 9-2)
  4. Wisconsin | 16-6  (8-3)
  5. Iowa | 17-5 (6-5)
  6. Maryland | 17-6 (8-4))
  7. Minnesota | 16-6 | (6-5)
  8. Indiana | 13-9 (4-7)
  9. Ohio State | 14-7 (4-6)
  10. Northwestern | 12-9 (3-7)
  11. Rutgers | 11-10 (4-7)
  12. Nebraska | 13-9 (3-8)
  13. Illinois | 7-15 (3-8)
  14. Penn State | 7-14 (0-10)

Purdue was able to keep it rolling in week 13 but the two wins they were able to get didn’t come without some struggle. Specifically the one against the worst team in the Big Ten, Penn State. Purdue would come out on top but it would take overtime for the Boilermakers to defeat the Nittany Lions 99-90.

Then the Boilermakers would participate later in the week against Minnesota and get yet another win. This one came by 10 points and who else but Carsen Edwards to lead Purdue with 19 points.

Purdue is by far the hottest team right now in the Big Ten, deserving the number one spot in these rankings for the first time all season.

It was bound to happen eventually, and for Michigan the middle of the Big Ten season is when it is happening as the Wolverines have lost 2 of their last 4 games. Michigan and Purdue are now tied for the top spot in the Big Ten.

The start of week 13 was a good one for the Wolverines however, as they were able to top Ohio State thanks to a strong second half. The interesting part of week 13 for Michigan comes via a surprising blow out loss to Iowa on Friday in which the Wolverines shot just 32% from the field and 24% from three.

Michigan hasn’t been world beaters on offense this season, ranking 218th in the nation in points per game, so when they give up 74 to a team like Iowa that is a recipe for failure.

The Wolverines still are 20-2 on the season and vying for a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament.
