The Ohio State football team suffered its first lost of the season to the Purdue Boilermakers. Here are grades of the Buckeyes’ units in week 8.

The Ohio State football team traveled to West Lafayette for a match up against a hot Purdue team coming off three straight wins. Many thought it could be a trap game similar to that of Iowa last year.

Were they right? Read below, to see how each Buckeye unit did during the away game against the Boilermakers.

First Quarter:

Offense:

Coming into this game, I was hopeful that the offense could cover up what has been a poor showing so far this year on defense for the Buckeyes.

Dwayne Haskins has been the light of this team, and a big reason why the Buckeyes were undefeated and number 2 in the country.

In this quarter Haskins and the Buckeyes weren’t really able to get anything going even though Haskins went a perfect 8 for 8 in the quarter.

Problem is, it was only for 47 yards.

As this year has gone on, the lack of a running game for the Buckeyes has worried me more and more because this offense is too one-dimensional.

The end of the quarter saw the Buckeyes drive deep into Purdue territory only for the whistles to be blown signaling the end of the quarter

Grade: C

Defense:

The Buckeyes defense saw an improvement to start off the game compared to the last few weeks and that is a promising sign.

That being said, on the third drive of the game, the Boilermakers drove 98 yards in 15 plays to score the first touchdown of the game.

The long drive culminated in an outstanding one-handed catch by Purdue’s Isaac Zico.

The defense played better than what I have come to expect of them, however it wasn’t good enough as the Buckeyes trailed 7-0 going into the second quarter.

Grade: B-

Special Teams:

First, yet another dime of a punt by Drew Chrisman drops on the one yard line.

Then Johnny Dixon takes a kick return across midfield to give the Buckeyes good field position after a Purdue touchdown.

That is how you get an A+ grade on special teams.

Grade: A+
