The Ohio State football team shouldn’t have a problem handling the Indiana Hoosiers today. A look at the season stats of both teams will explain why.

Ohio State vs. Indiana offensive and defensive matchups.

Let’s first take a look at the strengths of each team. The high-powered Buckeye offense against the stingy Hoosier defense.

Ohio State offense:

  • Total offense:  4th nationally averaging 557.4 yards per game.
  • Scoring offense: No. 4, 49 points per game.
  • Rushing offense: No. 29,  210.8 yards per game.
  • Passing offense: No. 7, 346.6 yards per game..

Indiana Defense:

  • Total defense: 19th nationally allowing 321.8 yards per game.
  • Scoring defense: No. 33, 21.2 points per game.
  • Pass defense: No. 9, 163 yards per game.
  • Rushing defense: No. 62,158.2 yards per game.

On the surface it looks like this may be a good matchup for Indiana and possibly a stale mate in the passing game. I don’t think so and here’s why.

First, the Hoosiers haven’t faced a quarterback like Dwayne Haskins who completes 70 percent of his passes and has thrown 19 touchdowns.

Second, they have never went up against six talented receivers like the Buckeyes have.

Third, Michigan State scored 35 points against Indiana in Bloomington and the Spartans aren’t considered an offensive juggernaut.

Fourth, the Buckeyes haven’t scored less than 49 points at home so far this season.

I think the defensive stats for Indiana are about to take a hit.

More from Ohio State Buckeyes

Indiana offense:

  • Total offense: 53rd nationally, 412.2 yards per game.
  • Scoring offense: No. 63, 28.2 points per game.
  • Rushing offense: No. 52, 179. 4 yards per game
  • Passing offense: No. 64, 232.8 yards per game

Ohio State defense:

  • Total defense: 42nd nationally allowing 358.4 yards per game.
  • Scoring defense: No. 18, 18.8 points per game
  • Rushing defense: No. 58, 156.2 yards per game.
  • Pass defense: No. 47, 202 yards per game.

I don’t think there is anything about the Indiana offense that has kept Ohio State defensive coordinator up nights this week. It is middle of the road in every category.
