Q: How for real is Penn State?

A: The Nittany Lions opened the season with a monumental scare in Beaver Stadium. They have since dominate their inferior opponents and are finding an offensive rhythm. Penn State was a very popular pick to win the Big Ten and clinch its first ever playoff berth.

We will get an accurate gauge on just how legitimate Penn State actually is when they welcome Ohio State to town on September 29th. There is no question the Nittany Lions have to replace top shelf talent on offense, it is just a matter of how fast can they do it as well as having them comfortable and prepared to face a team like the Buckeyes early on in the season.

I evaluated Penn State with a wait and see mentality due to them having to replace Saquon Barkley and Mike Gesicki as well as the fact they have the Buckeyes early on in the season as their first test of the season. Penn State’s schedule goes from lesser opponents to the polar opposite in Ohio State with a determined Urban Meyer, staff, and players.

Personally, I think the revenge factor and whiteout crowd will all give Penn State an emotional edge and enhanced capability to beat the Buckeyes. However, Ohio State still has the better head coach, staff, and more depth. The game will be hard-fought like years past and we will see if Penn State can pull off the home upset against one of the elite teams in the country.
