Ohio State Football: All Time Greats, The Post Woody Era.

There have been many great Ohio State football players since Woody walked the sidelines at Ohio Stadium. We will look at some of those players from the early 1980’s to the 2000’s that have made our list of the top 30 who have played for Ohio State. That will leave only the top 10 players of all time remaining, and they will be spotlighted in the next post.

The game of football, particularly on the offensive side of the ball, has changed dramatically since the days of three yards and a cloud of dust. Teams also play many more games today than they did 20 or 30 years ago. At times that makes it difficult in determining which player had the better career.  

So the deciding factor in selecting every player on the list, including these eight players, is the overall impact they had on college football in general and Ohio State in particular. And success against a certain team up north helped as well.

Before getting to these eight players I would like to acknowledge a player who probably should have been on this list, Lew Hinchman. Hinchman was a three time All-American as a halfback for Ohio State in 1930-32. There is very little information to be found on him other than that. But a three time All-American should at least be mentioned.

Well Woody mentored coach Earle Bruce and that’s where we begin. Earle mentored coach Jim Tressel and that’s where we end, with some of coach John Cooper’s stars in between. So, let’s look at some of the greats of the post Woody era, beginning with…..
