All Time Buckeye Greats: Through The Woody Hayes Era
Jim Houston had a long and successful career as a linebacker in the NFL, but before that he was the finest two-way end that ever played for coach Woody Hayes.
Houston was selected as a first team All-American twice, in 1958, 59, and was Ohio State’s most valuable player each of those seasons as well. He was primarily recognized for his blocking and tackling with his largest reception total being 11 catches in 1959. As a two way player he averaged 56 minutes of playing time per game in each of his two All-American seasons.
Houston was inducted into the Ohio State Varsity Hall of Fame in 1979, and was named to the Ohio State All-Century Team as a defensive end in 2000.
Jim Houston will be remembered by his play on the defensive side of the ball more than on offense. However, in coach Woody Hayes’ offense that was run first and pass when you absolutely had to, he excelled as a receiver as well. For his career Houston averaged 24.5 yards a reception. I wonder how many receivers who played for Woody can say that?
After graduation, Houston was drafted by former Ohio State coach Paul Brown in the first round of the NFL draft as a defensive end. He was later switched to linebacker and was voted All-Pro four times in his 13 years with the Cleveland Browns.
