Quarterbacks

Grade: B

Cardale Jones got the nod on Monday night and came out firing completing 3 of his first 4 passes. But he cooled off in the 2nd quarter however and had a costly interception that let the Hokies back into the game. Cardale was able to get control of the game again in the 3rd quarter thanks to the help of Braxton Miller. Jones finished 9 for 18 with 186 yards, 2 touchdowns, and a pick.

Cardale’s biggest impact possibly came in the running game. He finished with 99 yards and a touchdown.

I believe Jones looked to run too early in passing situations. There were times he didn’t complete his progression, but settled for a 5 to 6 yard run. Jones is a good runner, but he’s not in the game to run. He’s in there because of his arm. I’d like to see him scramble with the intent to throw, not just run for a few yards.

J.T. Barrett looked good when he was out there. He orchestrated a beautiful 5 play 75 yard touchdown drive that ended in a 26 yard touchdown pass.

It’s safe to say, the quarterback battle isn’t over yet.
