Ohio State Football top ten all-time passers in Buckeyes history
By Ryan Stano
Ohio State football career passing leader No. 3: Art Schlichter
- 7,547 yards passing
- 50 TDs
- 46 INTs
- 52.3% completion
No one ever wants to talk about Art Schlichter. This is despite the fact that he put up 7,547 yards passing in his career in the late 70s-early 80s. Those are some really impressive numbers considering the era of football that he played in!
The problem for Schlichter is his gambling. We already told you how he’s one of the biggest NFL Draft busts in Ohio State football history. His gambling is a reason why. He’s been in and out of prison for the better part of the last 40 years because of those issues.
When he was on the field, he was putting up a lot of passes. He actually has the second-most career passing attempts in Ohio State history with 951. He started all four years for the Buckeyes and finished in the top six in the Heisman Trophy voting twice.
Schlichter was an effective runner too. He accumulated 1,303 yards and 35 touchdowns on the ground in his four years, making him a true dual threat. It’s why he ended up being the fourth overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft by the Colts. He was a really good college player.
It’s a shame that he was never able to get help for his gambling demons. Otherwise, he could have been a really good pro player too. As it stands, his Ohio State legacy stands. Before C.J. Stroud was drafted this past April, he was the highest-drafted quarterback in Ohio State history.
The next guy on that list is the most recent quarterback Ohio State had.
