Ohio State football NFL Draft bust No. 9: Beanie Wells
2009 NFL Draft, Round 1, Pick 31
Arizona Cardinals, 2009-2012
Chris Wells, or as Ohio State football fans knew him, Beanie Wells, was a great collegiate player. He burst on the scene as a freshman during that great 2006 season when the Buckeyes made the National Championship Game after taking down #2 Michigan.
Wells had a big game against TTUN that season and would continue that throughout his career. He had 222 rushing yards against them the following year as a sophomore. Although Beanie suffered a foot injury to start his junior year, he still finished with almost 1,200 yards rushing.
Following that year, he declared for the NFL Draft and was the 31st overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. Unfortunately, he was carted off the field with an ankle injury during his first practice. Wells would continue to get kicked up throughout his career.
Injuries weren’t the reason he was a bust though. He actually had 1,047 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2011. What killed his career was his tension with Cardinals management following that season. He claimed in 2012 that he “was auditioning for 31 other teams” in his final game that year.
After the season, he was released and tore his Achilles during a workout with the Ravens. He never signed with another NFL team and his career was over. It’s a shame because he was physically built to be an imposing running back.
The next guy on this list was hit with injuries that shortened his career as well.
