Ohio State Football: 3 members of the 2020 recruiting class who are critical
By Ryan Stano
Steele Chambers was stuck in a crowded backfield. He was a running back that had shown some flashes of really good play, but the running back room was too crowded. In the end, he decided to switch positions to linebacker. He learned that position very quickly and became effective.
Chambers ended the season with 47 tackles, one sack, one interception, and a forced fumble. Those numbers aren’t spectacular, but they’re pretty good for a guy who just started playing the position last year. He should only get better as time goes on.
The linebacker room has had its struggles. Jim Knowles’ system will likely keep only two linebackers on the field most times. Chambers was the best linebacker last season, so stands to reason that he will be one of the linebackers getting the most snaps next year.
The defense has been holding this team back the last few seasons. Having Chambers pick up his game to a new level helps that immensely because of his speed. He can hit holes quickly to stop running backs, as well as go out and cover tight ends and some receivers.
Now that he will have another full offseason at linebacker, his feel for the position should be even better than what it was before. He should see his numbers go up in 2022 if he puts in the necessary amount of work. By all accounts, he’s a hard worker.
The final player on this list got his starting job last year and never let it go.
