Next, in 2016, Ohio State was one of the youngest teams in the country with over seventy underclassmen on their roster. The Buckeyes also drew one of the more difficult schedules in the country and were upset by Penn State due to a blocked field goal by Marcus Allen.

Ohio State earned wins over Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Michigan which was enough to impress the selection committee to earn a big into the playoff despite not playing for a conference championship. The Buckeyes became the first team in the playoff era to earn a berth without winning their conference.

This season Ohio State has already accomplished another first for the playoff era and has the chance for two more in the coming weeks. As for the one already done is their ranking. No team from the Big Ten has been ranked No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings in all six years of the system.

The Buckeyes checking in atop the list on Tuesday earned them their first ever first place ranking as well as the Big Ten’s first. However, one thing the initial No. 1 has yet to do is win the National Championship. If Ohio State is able to continue their dominant and impressive run, they will be the first to win the title having began in the top spot.

Lastly, a feat that has never been done in the history of sport is win ten conference games in a single season. Ohio State has a chance to make college football history this year if they can maintain their elite level of play for five more weeks.

The Big Ten is one of three Power 5 (Big 12 and PAC-12) to play nine conference games, so if Ohio State wins out and then the Big Ten Championship Game as well, the Buckeyes will be the first team in history to accomplish the incredible feat*.

*Also of note: Penn State, Minnesota, Oregon, and Baylor are all still eligible to win ten conference games as well.
