Ohio State Football: Week 8 Unit Grades vs. Purdue
3rd Quarter:
Offense:
Stop me if you have heard this before, but the Buckeye’s failed to score in the red zone after coming out firing on all cylinders.
The only thing that differs this statement from the rest of the game is the fact that it came at the beginning of the second half. That’s a time when being down by 11 going into the half the Buckeyes are supposed to turn it around.
News flash: It didn’t get better.
The performance in the red zone for the Buckeyes has just been embarrassing as the Buckeyes found themselves in a 4th and 1 situation. What genius play call was dialed up?
A screen pass, accompanied by a bad snap turned into an incompletion and another red zone failure.
The reason for this terrible performance stems largely from the line. This offensive line does not know how to pick up a blitz. There have been multiple times in this game where if a linebacker blitzed, they were going virtually unblocked into the backfield.
Grade: F
Defense:
The Purdue offense took the ball right down the field and scored on their first drive but the Buckeye defense played better as the quarter went on.
I have not thought that the defense has been that bad in this game. Maybe its being shielded by the poor performance on offense.
But the defense has been making enough stops and putting the offense in good enough field position, the offense just hasn’t been capitalizing.
There were still a couple of gash plays, but nothing overly drastic like in past weeks.
Grade: B
Special Teams:
The Buckeyes special teams were able to convert a field goal in this quarter after missing one in the second quarter. The punts and kicks were covered pretty well making for a solid quarter on special teams.
Grade: A
