Ohio State Football: All Time Greats, The Post Woody Era.
After Michael Doss was named first team All-American for the second consecutive year, there was speculation he would forego his senior season and turn pro. But Doss had unfinished business at Ohio State, so he returned to the Buckeyes with the intention of winning a national title. And that is exactly what he and his teammates accomplished in Ohio State’s magical run in the 2002 season.
Doss was one of the best strong safeties ever to play for the Buckeyes, and was as effective stopping the run as defending the pass. In his career Doss had 331 tackles, eight interceptions, eight fumble recoveries, and 6 quarterback sacks.
As good as Doss’ statistics were, they tell only part of the story. Teaming with Donnie Nickey, not only were they one of the best safety combinations in the country, the two seniors provided the leadership for the defense as well. That was on full display in the Illinois game.
With Ohio State about to play their first overtime period with their perfect season on the line, Doss and Nicky were celebrating on the sideline. Then the defense shut out the Illini to preserve the seven point victory. When asked about their celebrating before the overtime period, the two seniors said they came to Ohio State to play in big games like that. That attitude carried over to their teammates, and the defense came through every time the game was on the line in their championship season.
Michael Doss left Ohio State as a three time All-American and was the Defensive Player of the Year in the Big Ten for his performance in the 2002 season. He went on to have a fine NFL career. But more importantly Michael Doss has the piece of jewelry he came back to school for. The ring that proves he was a National Champion!
