Many people in college football consider the Pac 12 conference as being equal to, or  close to the Southeastern Conference in terms as overall strength. Stanford is playing as well as any team in the nation. If they win out their only loss would be to Northwestern at the beginning of the season and that would make a compelling case for the selection committee to consider.

In years past a one loss SEC champion would certainly be selected ahead of Stanford but possibly not now. Ohio State’s victory over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, following Wisconsin’s win over Auburn in the Outback bowl, changed the national perception about the strength of the Southeastern Conference.

Currently Alabama is ahead in the AP Poll by one spot over Stanford so a win against undefeated LSU and winning the rest of their games will give them the advantage to make the  playoffs. If they defeat LSU but lose their rival game at Auburn, the other one loss champions could could be LSU or Florida. There is a good chance the committee would pick Stanford over either team.
