It seems like when the Ohio State football team begins spring ball there is always an interesting situation at QB. This year will be no different.

There is no doubt about who will be the starting quarterback for Ohio State with Heisman favorite Justin Fields back. But Ryan Day landed two of the top quarterbacks in the 2020 recruiting class and both are early enrollees.

And backup battles have been interesting in the past.

There were terrific duels between J.T. Barrett-Cardale Jones and Joe Burrow-Dwayne Haskins. Those duos battled for the backup spot and the starting job the following year.

That may be the case with Jack Miller and C.J. Stroud, and one is a pro style QB and the other a dual threat the same as in the other two battles. Let’s first look at the players who was a long time commit to the Buckeyes.

Jack Miller was ranked the 13th PRO quarterback and the No. 332 overall player in the 2020 recruiting class in the 247Sports Composite. He is listed at 6 ft. 4, 210 pounds and is from Scottsdale, Arizona.

Miller slipped in the recruiting rankings late in his high school career almost certainly because he had to deal with injuries. He was invited to the Elite 11 Finals but per Eleven Warriors he decided it was best to shut things down with a couple of workouts left.

If Miller is now fully healthy, he may be the gem of the 2020 class.

C.J. Stroud is from Rancho Cucamonga, California and listed at 6 ft. 2.5 and 194 pounds. He was the 2nd ranked dual threat quarterback and the No. 41 overall player in this year’s recruiting class.

Stroud was also invited to the Elite 11, and was named MVP. To earn that honor while competing against the top quarterbacks in the country speaks volumes.

Miller and Stroud are both early enrollees and will try to get a leg up on the other before spring practices end, and one may compete for the backup spot with fifth year senior Gunnar Hoak.

It should be fun to watch these two outstanding young freshmen battle it out this spring, along with Hoak. With Justin Fields coming off an injury, you know Ryan Day will want to limit his reps and the backups will get plenty of opportunities. As a guy who played the position I can’t wait to see how they compete.
