The Ohio State football team wasn’t alone being led by a transfer quarterback in the Final Four with LSU and Oklahoma each having one as well.

With the success Justin Fields had after transferring to the Ohio State football program, along with Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts leading their teams to the CFP, expect coaches to look to the transfer portal for a quarterback. With the seasons those players had it’s understandable why they would.

Burrow probably won every award he was up for, including the Heisman Trophy, after completing 76.3 percent of his passes for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns. He also led LSU to the National Championship.

In Hurts’ only season at Oklahoma he passed for 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,298 yards and 20 touchdowns. Hurts was the runner-up in the Heisman race.

The true sophomore Fields threw for 3,273 yards and 41 touchdowns. He also rushed for 484 yards and 10 scores. Fields finished 3rd in the Heisman voting.

Now there will be coaches searching the transfer portal for the next star quarterback.

Anybody who has followed football for any time is fully aware coaches are copycats. When something is working for another team they often try to emulate it.

Remember when “experts” said Urban Meyer’s spread offense featuring the quarterback run wouldn’t work in the rugged SEC? After two national titles his first four years at Florida, other coaches began to employ some version of Urban’s offense. Now it’s rare when you watch a game with the QB under center most of the time.

With the way Burrow, Hurts and Fields performed this past season, you can’t blame a coach for looking to the transfer portal for a quarterback who may lead their team to a berth in the CFP.

If there isn’t a quarterback already on the roster he feels confident in, the coach would have to rely on a true freshman to take his team to the playoff. And guys like Trevor Lawrence, who led Clemson to a title in 2018, don’t come around often. So bringing in a transfer QB to take your team to the next level would appear to be a pretty good option.
