Big Ten Media Days has been quite the event this year in Chicago, but one of the overlooked segments of the affair is the student-athlete speech. This speech is given every year by a member of one of the programs that has displayed not only extraordinary efforts on the field, but in the classroom as well, where it matters the most.
This year, the speech was given by Nebraska standout running back Ameer Abdullah.
Abdullah is the lifeblood of the Nebraska offense, but he’s also done well in the classroom out in Lincoln. Last season, Abdullah rushed for 1,690 yards and went for over 100 in 11 of the 13 games that he played. Truly some outstanding statistics.
With Taylor Martinez now gone from their program, Abdullah becomes the unquestioned focal point of the Cornhuskers’ offense, but there’s no doubt that he can handle those duties.
But before he gets started on that journey in 2014, he gave the speech at Big Ten Media Days, which you can watch in the video below.
Abdullah was one of the better choices that they could have made to give this speech, and this young man will surely be missed by the game of college football when he departs.
