Of all the losses the Ohio State Buckeyes will have to endure this season from last, undoubtedly one of the players that will be missed the most will be linebacker Ryan Shazier. In three years of action for the Buckeyes, Shazier lived up to the lofty standards set by Buckeyes’ linebackers that came before him.
On Thursday he was rewarded for those efforts as he signed his rookie contract with the team who drafted him last month, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
With the Steelers being said to look for some offensive help in the first round last month with their no. 15 overall selection, the team decided instead to take one of the more productive backers to come out of the Big Ten the last few years.
During his time in Columbus, Shazier amassed 317 total tackles including 45.5 for loss with 23.5 sacks. As the Big Ten offenses continued to evolve, so did the athletic Shazier along with them the past few years, keeping up step for step, earning him the distinction of becoming a first-round pick in the NFL Draft.
That athleticism should translate into a long career in Pittsburgh with the Steelers. With the style of defense they run under coordinator Dick LeBeau, Ryan should hopefully end up making just as big of a name for himself in the NFL as he did at the collegiate level.
Congratulations are in order to one of the best linebackers to come through Columbus, Ryan Shazier!
