Ohio State started as one of the top basketball teams in the NCAA, but have slid in recent weeks completely out of the AP Top 25. Their opponent this weekend, Michigan State, has also slid down the ranking recently to the back end of the AP Top 25 in the latest poll. The underwhelming seasons from these two teams hasn’t stopped ticket prices from rising for Sunday’s game in Columbus.
The average price for Ohio State basketball tickets at Schottenstein Arena this season was $49. The average price on the secondary market for the game against Michigan State is more than double that average, currently $120. The $120 average is just below the get-in price of $121 for the Big Ten Championship game in football between these two schools in December. It’s the most expensive average price of the season for any Buckeyes home game this season, surpassing the most recent home game against Minnesota, which had an average price of $114. While the average price for Sunday is well above the season average, the get-in price hasn’t increased as much at only $37.
Ohio State will come into the game losing their last two games to Penn State and Indiana, both on the road. Michigan State has lost three of their last four and has one more home game against Iowa Thursday night before they travel to Columbus for the regular season finale. Buckeyes fans are staying concentrated on the final home game rather than focusing on Big Ten tournament tickets.
For the Buckeyes, this game could be big for how the team will fare in the tournament next week. Despite having the fourth best overall record, Ohio State’s 9-8 conference record puts them on pace to be out of the top four conference seeds and missing out on a first-round bye. A win by the Spartans over Iowa on Thursday would actually help the Buckeyes by hurting the Hawkeyes’ conference record.
Earlier in this season, this game would have been expected to be between two top teams in the country, but it has turned into two teams trying to find their footing before the start of the conference tournament. Even with the relative disappoint of these two seasons, the high average price shows Buckeye fans are still excited to send the team to Indianapolis with one last win at home.
With the increase in average price, but still a relatively low get-in price for the game, targeting that lower price could be a good deal for anyone heading to Columbus on Sunday.
