Ohio State Buckeyes vs. California Golden Bears Post Game Report: Buckeyes Rip Bears 52-34

The Ohio State Buckeyes dispatched the California Golden Bears 52-34 tonight, and Kenny Guiton was sensational in his second game as the replacement starting quarterback for the Bucks.

Let’s start from the beginning. In the first six minutes, the Buckeyes scored three touchdowns, while the Golden Bears offense looked lost and uncoordinated. Guiton threw for all three touchdowns, the first two going to Devin Smith. Smith finished the night with 149 receiving yards.

Guiton also threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Chris Fields, who hauled in his third touchdown grab of the season. By that point, most thought that Ohio State had put this one in the win column. However, California continued to fight, as quarterback Jared Goff threw a 43-yard touchdown to keep the Golden Bears within striking distance.

At the end of the first quarter, Cal was only down by 10.

Kenny Guiton was consistent on his deep throws, but his short passes (mainly his shovel passes) were slightly inaccurate. In the second quarter, the only touchdown scored by the Bucks was a on a carry by Jordan Hall, his first of three in the game. The lack of offensive firepower in the second quarter gave opportunities aplenty to California, but Ohio State’s defense held Cal’s drives to field goals 2 times.

In the second half, Ohio State opened things up with another Jordan Hall score, and later a touchdown throw from Guiton to Philly Brown. Cal’s confidence on both sides of the ball proceeded to fade, and they only scored one more touchdown the rest of the way. Unsurprisingly, Ohio State won 52-34, advancing to 3-0 on the year.
