OSU 2012 Depth Chart: Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

Remember how I said that projecting the starting offensive line for OSU in 2012 could be difficult?  I guess I forgot just how hard it might be to say who will be catching passes for the Buckeyes in the fall.

If Ohio State were returning some obvious playmakers and proven receivers next year, then this would simply be a matter of plugging in the names and waiting for them to take the field.  OSU’s offense, however, included three receivers tied for the most receptions on the team with 14.  Total.  14 catches.  Seriously.  DeVier Posey, the only departing scholarship WR, played in just three games and almost caught up to them, ending his final year as a Buckeye with 12 catches.

There are rumblings coming out of the early practices that a couple of guys may separate themselves from the pack, but I have a feeling that this is still anyone’s game.  Corey “Philly” Brown will hopefully emerge as OSU’s leader in the wide receiving core, and eliminate his hands of stone once and for all.  Devin Smith, the OSU sprinting/jumping trackster, could thrive in Urban’s slot receiver position, and could be the person that we see stretching the field with bubble screens, as Tom Herman wants to do.  Last but not least, I think that Mike Thomas, the incoming freshman, could earn himself a starting Z Receiver role if he is able to pick up the offense and quickly adjust to the college tempo.  If you’re currently unable to guess who our starting tight end will be in 2012, even after looking at the picture above, please excuse yourself from this website…(hint: it’s Jake Stoneburner).
