Hyde in the Shadows

Today, I’m depressed.  I know that most of you reading this blog are too, so I feel like I need to bring something positive to light.  No, it’s not another letter to Urban Meyer asking him to come help out in 2012.  What needs to be brought up and discussed are some fantastic numbers that one Buckeye is putting up right now.  The spotlight has been on Braxton Miller, Jordan Hall, Joe Bauserman, Jake Stoneburner, and any number of other players that have contributed.  Let’s not forget about the contributions of Carlos Hyde through the first five games of this season.

  • Carlos Hyde is the team’s leading rusher with 296 yards on 62 carries.  This total is more yards on fewer carries than Boom Herron had through the first five games last season.  His 4.8 yards per carry this season is also the best on the team.
  • Hyde has 9 receptions for 65 yards.  Not overwhelming, by any means, but his 9 catches are more than Jaamal Berry, Zach Boren, Rod Smith, and Jordan Hall combined.  (Side note, we’re averaging over 7 yards per pass to a RB, but have only completed 15 this season due to a lack of attempts…see Bollman, Jim
  • Only Jake Stoneburner has more touchdowns and receptions at this time than Carlos Hyde.
  • Although he’s rarely referred to as a playmaker, Carlos Hyde’s TD scamper of 36 yards against Toledo is still tied for the longest gain of the season from scrimmage for the scarlet and gray.

I’m not suggesting that Jordan Hall isn’t a leader on this team and someone that we should continue to get the ball to.  He is obviously a playmaker as well, but let’s not keep Hyde in his shadow.  Hyde’s performance, although not a surprise, has been one of the lone bright spots in a season where we will take as many as we can get.  We’ll see what happens next weekend in Lincoln, but hopefully it involves Carlos Hyde pounding the ball through the Cornhusker defense.  Keep up the good work, Carlos, and Buckeye Nation will start talking about you a lot more.  I know you’re all on Twitter, so let @King_Hyde34 know he’s doing a helluva job for the Bucks so far this season, and then go ahead and check out the rest of the Scarlet & Game crew to make sure you haven’t missed any of our blogs. @AJBorland @hewls and @THEscottyI
