Size Does Matter: Ray Small

Size does matter…and, unfortunately for him, his brain, common sense, and football productivity amounted to his last name, Small.  Nick Hewlett may have taken the high road in his article by not even mentioning his name, but I’m more of a down-to-earth, low road kind of guy, and Ray Small has been in today’s headlines for his decision to come out and add to the pile of accusations against Ohio State.  Don’t misread my disdain for him as a statement of innocence for OSU.  Many Buckeyes are guilty of taking advantage of opportunities that were thrown their way, and their coach and leader is guilty of dishonesty.  However, it annoys me to no end when a  bad apple tries, by confusing his own guilt with “the norm,”  to make a mountain out of a molehill (ok, so it’s definitely not a molehill, so whatever is above that and below a mountain).

Ray Small, who was a notorious troublemaker with Ohio State, was in Jim Tressel’s doghouse so much that he would undoubtedly be the Foursquare Mayor (it’s a smart phone app reference, if you don’t get it, you’re probably better for it).  It is sad to think that this overhyped player, who everyone knew was trouble and was always being punished for his behavior and attitude, will get his say in this situation.  However, I can’t say that I’m surprised by this development, as Ray Small seems to be allergic to personal accountability and maturity.

As much as I feel the need to defend OSU when people like Ray Small jump into the finger pointing game, I take pride in the fact that many others out there, including current and former OSU athletes, do the same.  This can be witnessed through several comments made on Twitter today, such as:

Beanie Wells – “The nerve of some cats!! It’s one thing to bite the hand that feeds, but to go and lie about what u were being fed???? Really?! Smh”

Brian Hartline – “Stop crying and lieing… Just bc u didn’t play as much as u wanted to doesn’t mean u can talk now…”

Michael Brewster – “Show me a coward and I will show you ray small.”
